I have a long haired cat who HATES getting brushed (yes I'm gentle, he's just saucy) and the older he gets the worse he is at grooming himself so we just fight all the time now about getting brushings.

I sprinkles less fussy vibes for your cat because all of mine love being brushed, and they all attack me for a turn whenever I'm brushing just one of them.

My two long-haired cats also hate being brushed and one of them has to go to the vet once a year to get a shavedown and she's always SO happy afterward and struts around the house feeling herself.

Probably an obvious thing to ask but does he have anything notable he really likes? If you can associate the brushing with the positive feedback he might tolerate it more. Cats are stubborn and it'll take time obviously but I had a similar problem with my cat and he's a total weirdo who loves almonds so he would only let me brush him if I gave him an almond to play with.

I love this idea anon but honestly, the thing he loves most is attention from me (when he decides he wants it, of course). He's a total stereotypical cat and if he doesn't want to do something he simply WON'T! But I might throw an almond at him and see if something happens.
