This is going to be a rant and I usually try not to get involved in the rp gender wars, but the current state of trying to get a non-sol psl has left me so frustrated. It feels like so many people have blurred the line between sol and non-sol due to their obsession with romance. I enjoy specifically romantic non-sol sls too, but I also think so many people's fixation on romance has ruined the ability to look for any kind of non-sol psl because they've so heavily incorporated things that shouldn't apply to non-sol. It's at the point now where ijers are insisting the planet Zzorp in the year 3492 that's only populated by an alien race also has the social construct gender binary and human spectrum of sexuality so they're like "sorry I don't do femme/het, it's boring, I only want to play against a man because it's fresh to me" for a sl that was already planned that romance wouldn't be the main focus, maybe they would kiss once in 6 months, and I'm just over here like 🧍 because I simply do not understand how that's relevant to the action-filled world building-focused development-heavy genre sl I pitched, but ok I will icon a cishet earth man and change zero other details about my alien character so this sl between two aliens is now more fresh in your mind.

You have preferences, and other writers have preferences. No one should have to justify them. There's nothing wrong with playing girls or writing romance or only wanting het as the girl. Everyone in IJ would be happier if they stopped trying to guilt or bully people into doing what they want.

Not op again but I feel like I read a different comment than what you guys are replying to so I can't help myself. If you only want to play a het girl in romance, wouldn't you say that from the jump instead of planning an sl where you say at the beginning romance doesn't matter instead of wasting everybody's time?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Not OC, but it read to me like op planned a sl, and someone flaked when they said they wanted to pb a girl.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and that someone could've been a slash guy or a het girl, but either way op wasn't shaming or bullying anybody. They're venting that they have to apply ij's craziness about gender and sexuality to literal space aliens because people only care about sling against a man and nothing else even if they say otherwise. The nonsol that I write isn't even that level of removed from Earth but I still get their frustration.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I get why it sucks when so many people lie about their openness. I also agree we need to do better and throw away outdated terms, but that won't change what people want to write for better or worse.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would. I'd never plan a sl when people are vague about the character they want to play because I have preferences and want to waste no one's time. It confuses me what OP is trying to say in that case. Did they plan a whole sl, and the person lost interest when they said who they wanted to PB? That's valid, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Idk but I don't think it's relevant, I think their point is that when you're writing nonsol it can be so annoying that people will talk to you about character plot etc but then you have to wave the magic dick in order to proceed and if you're trying to rp for character development it feels dumb because why does it even matter in some of these instances.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Because the person writing that character doesn't want to write romance against someone without a dick, and they shouldn't have to if they don't want to. The problem is not being upfront about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Anon I truly mean this in a very nice way, but not every person who is venting is saying somebody is wrong and they are right. Reading every comment in here like we're Judge Judy and need to determine who is right and who is wrong is not helpful. Sometimes a vent is just a vent. When my bestie goes out to dinner with me and says "I'm frustrated there are no single people in this city!" they're not shaming me for being in a relationship, and me saying "People are allowed to be in a relationship if they want to and shouldn't have to be single if they don't want to" is a weird thing to say. If it doesn't apply, let it fly.

+1 I'm tired of anons judging me for only wanting to write het, and these vents are always thinly veiled shittalking.

If it doesn't matter why does the icon have to be a cis het f?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Not op but as somebody who knows how to read it seems like they changed their icon at the end of the story unlike y'all who are unwilling to change your preferences, but why are people not allowed to pick their own pb these days? At the very least shouldn't we let the other person pick whoever they want, we pick whoever we want, and as long as nobody is obscenely young or irl trash, we just go from there?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is fully me as a nonbinary aroace not comprehending how the gender of my slp's character could make the sl inherently more or less interesting. I believe people when they say that it does for them but I surely don't understand it. We're all just aliens from Zzorp.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I brought this up many years ago and got dogpiled to hell and back, but this is a much more palatable example of why I haaaaate the terms het/slash/femme and will never classify anything I write under those terms. They're outdated and rooted in ugliness and so many rpers specifically use them (and other phrases like "exes of either gender") to reinforce the gender binary and keep rp exclusionary. I would especially love to see less of it from my fellow queer people who roll into anons on the reg to make comments about queerness that directly exclude afab nonbinary people, trans women, gnc people, etc.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Other servers use mxm, fxf, etc, but that might be exclusionary, too. It won't change anything, anyway, because people only want to play someone with a cis female icon against a cis male icon.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I went through a misguided delusional period of trying to get something for my favorite nb pb and it's actually very awkward trying to reply to posts in psls because of the sheer number of people who put het or slash in their posts and not knowing whether they would consider your pb male or female enough for their request, whether they were basing their priorities on genitals for smut, or whether they were just a bigot who only wanted cis people.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I pb/sometimes play trans and nb people and it's impossible to know, and I've had someone be pretty boldly and openly transphobic because I offered them in a list.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fellow queer I hate them too Anon but trying to be the change on this server is like Sisyphus rolling that rock.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I got what you were saying and I agree with you, I can't believe anons are disagreeing with this but I guess that's the reason IJ is in the state that it's in.
