Why do people use non-clumping litter?

I know you are supposed to use it for kittens just in case they ingest some litter but generally it is safe to use for adult cats so past kittenhood I have no idea? In that case I would rather use a pellet alternative than non clumping litter anyway.

I found it cheaper in the long run when I had two cats. But now I have one (the other was rehomed) and I use Genius Litter. That stuff is great, it's already helped once with getting my cat to the vet for a UTI before it was even bad enough to show on their tests.
