I think RP being bleaker than ever these days has contributed to the increase of characters and storylines getting copied. People see a successful character or storyline and they think they can replicate that success by taking on the same concept, personality, job, etc. or by going for the same pairing no matter how unconventional it is. People are so desperate for something to work out but there's no self-awareness for the actual problem.
